Growing North Minneapolis is a community driven collaboration with the University of Minnesota that focuses on youth and their communities. Through intergenerational mentorship and urban agriculture, the group works to advance environmental, social, and racial justice in North Minneapolis. Hakanson and Chaney chose hand tools to symbolize their partnership. Hand tools for cultivating crops are as old as humanity and the foundation of human food production across cultures and continents. The tools are also symbolic of the partnership’s commitment to work together for the common good, to renew and expand their relationships to each other and to the land.
