Engagement and the Arts

Eric Avery

Minneapolis-based artist, cultural organizer, and performer Eric Avery has been named UROC’s 2020 Artist in Residence. In his role, Avery will create and host a series of workshops and immersive performances that build upon the groundwork laid by UROC’s Trauma Recovery Project, which brought together community expertise and University researchers in an examination of trauma-related issues important to Minneapolis’ Northside community.

A self-described “reparationist, cultural organizer, and curious queer creative,” Avery is a fiscal year 2020 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. His commitment to relationship-centered work has put him in partnership with non-profits, municipalities, social service agencies, universities, farms, community centers, prisons, and houses throughout the Midwest.

Avery's UROC residency is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board via legislative appropriation from the Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Details about his workshops will be made available on uroc.umn.edu and in the UROC Community News monthly newsletter. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected]
