(From L to R) Jessica Forrester (Graduate Research Assistant, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota) and Lesa Clarkson (Associate Professor, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota)
Clarkson’s award-winning program, Prepare2Nspire, is a culturally conscious mathematics tutoring and mentoring program for students of color and urban learners. The program not only acts as an extracurricular outlet for in- school mathematics learning, but also provides students with social support from adult mentors who share similar lived experiences. Clarkson and Forrester chose a graphing calculator to represent their partnership, which students earn as part of their program. Students also receive a mathematics toolkit filled with graphing paper, pencils, ruler, and notebooks they can use in their classes—and a hot meal at every meeting.
