Christopheraaron Deanes and Hawona Sullivan Janzen stand next to a brick wall
(From L to R) Christopheraaron Deanes (Artist and Director, The Roho Collective) and Hawona Sullivan Janzen (Gallery Curator, Robert J. Jones Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center, University of Minnesota)

Sullivan Janzen and Deanes chose Deanes’ painting—Mother Earth—to symbolize their partnership because it speaks to them of the birthing, caring, and sharing of the community through the arts. A 2010 chance meeting of Sullivan and Deanes at UROC brought about a long-term partnership between the University and the Roho Collective, a North Minneapolis-based arts organization that develops and supports artists of color. Together, UROC and the Collective produced many exhibits and built the community- focused art foundation on which the UROC Gallery exists.
