U of M researchers and community experts are launching a public discussion series to examine barriers in treating chronic pain.

Up to 80 percent of people in the U.S. experience back pain at some point in their lives with people of color, and those with less education and income, having the poorest outcomes. Most of the time the discomfort is temporary but, for some, the pain persists and becomes disabling.

Leading University Engagement with Faith Communities—12:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 2

Community-engaged scholarship and building mutually-beneficial relationships between universities and their broader communities is a growing national priority in higher education. And while faith communities often provide the anchor for many community-based initiatives, there is an uneasy relationship between these communities and secular colleges and universities.

The World Inside You:

Through March 14 Reception: 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 9 The University of Minnesota's Creativity Camp Study is both scientific research and a wildly fun eight-day camp experience infused with creative exploration. This exhibition mirrors the camp’s overarching theme, focused around an invitation to travel “the world inside you.” Like exploring the ocean, exploring the self involves delving into constantly evolving depths and encountering unexpected multitudes. This exhibition invites the audience to experience the discoveries made by camp participants in their interior and creative journeys.

2022 UROC Research Agenda Grant Competition — Deadline: 8 p.m. Monday, October 24

UROC seeks proposals by University of Minnesota faculty to address the critical issues outlined in the UROC Research Agenda through collaborative, community-based research projects. The agenda and its annual annual grant competition aim to stimulate and guide collaborative research in the topic areas while improving outcomes through robust, long-term partnerships.

UROC celebrates FLOW Northside Arts Crawl with activities July 28-30

UROC celebrates this year's FLOW Northside Arts Crawl with free activities centered in its current art exhibits and a special event with Twin Cities artist Don Walker. Hosted by the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition, FLOW is a three-day festival of creativity, showcasing multi-disciplinary Northside artists of all ages and experiences at various locations around the community. 

U of M hosts Juneteenth march, celebration in North Minneapolis—noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 18

The U of M will host is inaugural Juneteenth Celebration —Was Is Will Be Honoring Our Black Past, Black Present, Black Future—on Saturday, June 18, 2022. The event will begin with a commemorative march at noon from Willard Park at 1626 Queen Ave. N. to the University’s Robert J. Jones Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) at 2001 Plymouth Ave. N., where the outdoor block party will take place from 1 to 6 p.m.

U of M Assistant Professor Fernando Burga takes on the legacy of fast food outlets in North Minneapolis with a UROC Research Agenda grant

Fernando Burga grew up in Miami and remembers feeling nostalgia for Peru, his family’s homeland. Like many immigrants, he missed his country’s language and culture. He also missed the food and the feeling of community and coming together that goes along with good meals made from familiar, comforting ingredients.
